Weightless

Her swollen fingers dip into the ocean as the sun is laid to rest along the horizon, sipping up any light left in the sky. Accepting the water’s temperature, the woman waddles further in, feeling a cooling sensation encase her torso, shedding her dry skin. With one shaky breath, she plunges fully in, squeezing her wrinkled eyelids shut and feeling the water wash off the last trace of his touch. She blinks her eyes open to a blurry world of boundless ocean, watching the guppies glide through the water, swimming to wherever they please. She desires the same, digging her feet into the sand before launching herself deeper into the blue and leaving behind the shore. She feels the water thread through her fingers as she swims, finally floating after being dragged down for decades. Flipping over, she gasps in the crisp air, noticing a navy-black sky replacing the previous sunset. The woman stretches out her limbs, no longer afraid to take up space, and just drifts as she feels her pulse slow, soaking in the feeling of weightlessness.
